*behind the collection*

Sector 27 is a reference to the infamous *27 CLUB*, composed of artists who died at the age of 27. Amongst these artists is Kurt Cobian, Mac Miller, Amy Winehouse, and Jimi Hendrix. With May being Mental Health Awareness Month, I hope this collection helps people feel seen, encourages self-expression, and reminds people that seeking help is a strength, not a weakness. The staple piece and first shirt I made in this collection is the “I Joined The 27 Club Tee”. Inspired by a conversation with a friend and fellow artist at a house party in Montecito CA, he expressed his issues with drug abuse and depression. But instead of seeking support, he felt drawn deeper into the “sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll” lifestyle, believing that pain and self-destruction would make his art more meaningful and deep.”. I hope in this collection to break the stigma of men hiding their struggles and the romanization of depression and drug abuse in hopes of creating “deeper art”. Instead, I hope to promote art as a form of expression, healing, and storytelling; a way for people to share their experiences, connect with others, and realize they are not alone in what they’re going through.
